One of the most important topics in South Africa is the availability of EV charging stations around the country.

Motorists say it’s best to charge your electric car at home overnight, and that works fine We have met.But what if you need to take a cross-country trip or you have to run a lot during the day and you are worried about draining your car battery and not having a good place to charge?

Fortunately, Audi has launched a modular mobile concept for charging electric cars in well-functioning German cities and provinces in South Africa.

The world’s first electric vehicle charging concept

Given the growing number of electric models, demand for infrastructure is growing, although South Africa has a strong charging network around the country. As more drivers switch to EV over the next decade, we need more charging stations, and that’s where Audi can come up with a solution.

Earlier this week, the company unveiled its first Audi charging center in Germany, and is considered the only EV payment concept in the world. It is a modern fast charging station.

How the EV Audi Charging Hub works

Modular cubes are the basis of Audi Charging Center. These flexible containers can be reassembled and dispersed within a few days. Cubes provide two fast charging stations for each compartment and can be combined in different constellations.

Used and manufactured lithium-ion batteries operate as power storage systems. These are commonly called second-life batteries taken from dispersed development vehicles. By reducing costs and resources, Audi eliminates the need for complex infrastructure, high-voltage power lines and expensive transformers.

The Audi Charging Hub battery storage solution provides fast charging infrastructure where the grid is insufficient. Thanks to the temporary storage capacity of approximately 2.45MW, the experimental projects in Germany require only 200 kW of green power with a low voltage network, which is enough to power Audi charging resources. 200 kW is sufficient to continuously charge the storage modules. The solar panels on the roof also provide up to 30 kW of green power.

Audi customers can charge their electric cars up to 320 kW with six charging points. A total of 80 vehicles can be charged here without the energy storage system’s capacity limitation combined with the center’s 200 kW power input.

Audi is launching six full-fledged electric cars in South Africa by 2022, and these charging stations could be a good solution for early adopters with limited access to in-house infrastructure. The charging stations are important to us because they make South Africans interested in the EV charging game and can create local versions of these modules as our electric car grows in the future.
