As global warming becomes more and more serious, companies are now trying to come up with more ecological solutions to replace the old, more harmful practices that are endangering our environment. In recent years, the most popular revolutionary solution has been the electric car. But how exactly do electric cars work, and are they really environmentally friendly?
What is an electric car?
In short, unlike traditional cars used by many people, electric cars do not depend on fuel or diesel. Instead, it is based on electricity. These cars have electric motors, electric switches and batteries, all of which operate without traditional fuel. They also require a standard operating temperature and a heating system to maintain the charging port so that you can easily recharge.
As you know, these cars require charging using an electrical outlet to keep working, but this is not really the same as charging your phone or laptop. While most of us charge our personal equipment every day, most electric cars only charge once every two months. Of course, if you drive a lot, you may need to charge it regularly, but they never load your car every day, which makes them very convenient to use.
Electric car owners tend to charge their cars at home, but now there are public charging stations that operate in the same way as your average gas station. However, unlike any gas station you find, most stations are completely free to use.
The big advantage of electric cars is that they do not emit harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The problem with traditional vehicles is that they emit carbon dioxide, as well as other greenhouse gases. These gases then retain heat in the atmosphere, creating a similar heating effect into the greenhouse (hence the name). Such gases contribute significantly to global warming, causing our polar ice cap to melt and increase sea level.
Electric cars do not need fuel, they are tiring and do not emit greenhouse gases. So, they seem to be the ultimate solution to greenhouse gas emissions, right? Well, it’s not really that easy.
Are electric cars really environmentally friendly?
While electric cars do not emit greenhouse gases directly when used, their carbon footprint is definitely not zero. The process of making electric cars is energy-intensive and has its own significant environmental impact.
This may surprise you, but studies show that an electric car requires more energy than traditional power. Thus, the production of electric cars generally has a higher carbon footprint. This is primarily based on the materials needed.
The metal needed to make an electric car weighs more than it needs for traditional versions. However, the production of these high-performance metals requires a lot of energy, which is absorbed by the entire carbon footprint of the production process.
It is important to remember that electric cars still need some kind of energy to operate. Thus, while fossil fuels do not directly emit electricity, electricity itself is very important.
For example, say you are an American citizen who owns an electric car. About 83% of US electricity comes from renewable resources (or fossil fuels) such as coal, oil and gas, and you may be recharging your electric car.
The production of electricity through these materials requires combustion, which releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. So, even if your electric car does not directly emit greenhouse gases, you may be playing a role in the emission of such gases when you charge them.
Therefore, neither traditional nor electric cars can completely eliminate the same carbon footprint. But does that mean electric cars are worthless?
Do I have to buy an electric car?
If you are planning to buy one to reduce your carbon footprint, it is important to understand the environmental impact of an electric car. So, how much better are they for the planet than conventional cars?
An average electric car requires 15 kilowatts of electricity to travel 100 km. Therefore, to operate, it requires only less than 2,000 kWh per year. Only financially, this costs less than a traditional car. On average, it costs $ 660 a year to run an electric car. Pretty affordable, right?
Well, let’s not forget that electric cars are more expensive than traditional cars. You can get a basic electric Tesla model for around $ 42,000. However, you can get the most beautiful Audi A4 oil at the same price. You can get even a brand new BMW 2 series at an average sale price of around $ 35,000. And you can find a lot more fuel-efficient models like your average Kia or Toyota.
In terms of environmental impact, this really varies with each and every car model. The average electric car actually has less carbon footprint than gasoline or diesel cars. Although it requires more energy to produce electric cars, their electric life cycle produces less carbon footprint than traditional vehicles. In fact, a Chinese-made electric car in Poland still produces 22% less CO2 and 28% less gasoline.
Therefore, the environmental benefits of electric cars are very clear. Although they cost more to buy in full, their low operating costs and favorable environmental impact make them a better choice for our planet than traditional vehicles.

While electric cars are becoming more and more popular, we need to find green solutions in other areas of our lives to truly save the planet.
