Thousands of companies across the country, such as Trenton Forge, do not have fossil fuels or corn-based ethanol, which contain a fraction of the fuel for their future electric vehicles. “Anyone who thinks this transition will go smoothly is deceiving himself,” he told consulting firm HHS.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the construction, sale, and service of vehicles employ an estimated 4.7 million people in the United States. Some jobs will not go away – there will still be demand from distributors and tire shops.

But with conventional car engines and transmission with hundreds of components, some electric-vehicle power generators have as few as 17, according to congressional research.
